Kálmán Nádasdy essentially rewrote the libretti of the Ferenc Erkel operas Hunyadi László and Bánk bán from scratch; not only in the dramaturgical sense, changing the order of scenes or the identities of the cast within the operas, but also on the level of vocabulary, sentence structure, and poetic imagery – thus his work is the equivalent of a translation from Hungarian to Hungarian. This paper portrays the effects of this transformation.
