What Will Happen to Job’s Children? István Szabó Jr.: Job, 1972
Abstract:
The analysis deals with the stage adaptation of the play Job (Jób) by Ferenc Tóth, the runner-up of the 1970 Forum Book Competition, but also covers the original work. As a context, it introduces the development of Hungarian drama in Yugoslavia and discusses the different literary approaches to attitude dramas. It attempts to reconstruct the performance from the available reviews, and in examining the history of its impact, it discusses the failure of the 18th Sterija Games and the curious fact that Ferenc Tóth’s Job, together with Ferenc Deák’s Breathlessness (Légszomj), was removed from the repertoire of the People’s Theatre of Subotica for lack of the ‘right’ ideology.
