The Bars of Attila Seprődi Kiss. The Life of a Theatre Director is the title of the book, written by AndrásSalamon about the Transylvanian-Hungarian theatre director’s life and heritage. Seprődi Kiss was born in 1941 in the city of Sepsiszentgyörgy (Romania, Transylvania, Szeklerland). He was an actor, a translator, and a well-known theatre director of the Hungarian State Theatre of Sepsiszentgyörgy, between 1968 and 1985. The book presents his career—which was the link between the “old” and “new” theatre aesthetics in Romanian-Hungarian theatre—and heritage (he died nearly forgotten in 2008) in an unusual way: instead of a traditional biography, the author presents his most famous theatre plays in chronological order; with deep understanding, historical accuracy, a plethora of data, sources and pictures, similar to the Philther-method. The career of Seprődi shines through these theatre plays, which in Salamon’s book evolve from “simple” bits of theatre history to psychoanalysis and present the life of a director who was forced to live and create in a totalitarian regime.
