The Intersection of Public and Playwright Identities in the Works of Árpád Göncz and István Csurka
Abstract:
This study examines a specific segment of the political nature of Hungarian theatre in the latter half of the 20th century, shaped profoundly by censorship’s varying intensity. Focusing on Árpád Göncz and István Csurka, two pivotal figures in the social and cultural dialogues of the 1980s, the paper explores how these writers transitioned from literary work to political engagement. Reflecting on their legacies a decade after their passing, this article seeks to outline their careers within the cultural framework of the late Kádár era and the early 1990s transition years, examining significant performances, biographical intersections, and reception to assess their impact on Hungarian theatre history.
