In this personal essay, the author seeks to answer the question of what kind of special psychological make-up is required to work as a dramaturg in Hungary. Besides a receptiveness to literature and drama and good writing skills, it is at least as important to be able to support the director’s work from behind the scenes. But this skill is difficult to teach. But the dramaturgical mindset can be taught, just as the ability to recognise dramatic situations. For the author it is important to be in touch with reality in their work, which is why they often work with civilian experts when creating a script. And in their community and participatory theatre work, they involve civilians in the performance using their stories and ideas. For the author, theatre is a social forum, which aims to initiate a dialogue with the audience.
