In this paper, I analyse Jacques Copeau’s actor training approach, searching for the balance between playfulness and discipline. After giving a contextual landscape for the study, I present the basic pedagogical aims of Copeau and the Vieux-Colombier School, then analyse the exercises described by Mark Evans. In my view, playfulness is highly represented in Copeau’s approach, but discipline, an equally important quality in his philosophy, is overshadowed. I would like to emphasise, through practical analyses, the discipline his training approach requires. I conduct my research in English based on the works of Mark Evans and John Rudlin.
