The oeuvre of János Térey has previously been approached primarily via his poems and his prose. The reception of Térey as a playwright didn’t extend beyond the performances themselves, and the subsequent theatrical reviews. But these are significant works, that did not yet find their organic place as part of the contemporary canon of plays, and as part of theatres’ repertoires. This paper analyses the beginnings of Térey’s theatre career, and his first three premieres: Nibelung Estates, Casemates and Table Music.
