Few Hungarian authors, and even fewer playwrights have had such an effect on the international literary scene as Ferenc Molnár did – although even Hungarian scholars have not yet created the monographic evaluation of the entire spectrum, from Broadway to rural houses of culture. The thesis of my paper is that this lack is related to a rupture in the reception process, which is why I centre the 1948-1956 period in my research, the period when no works by Molnár were, or could be, staged.
