The aim of this paper is to analyse the stage adaptation (dir. Péter Gothár, National Theatre, 2011) of Péter Esterházy’s drama, I am Your. It undertakes to present in detail the relevant aspects of the performance, such as the contexts of its production (National Theatre, Róbert Alföldi, Péter Esterházy), the semiotic and narratological analysis of the dramatic text, the director’s concept and interpretation, the functional scenography, and finally the relevance of the performance in Hungarian theatre history. The main goal of the thesis is to prove that Péter Gothár’s direction interprets Esterházy’s play (which was many times labelled as problematic) correctly.
